Sophocles, Fr. 735 (Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 10, 428 A)

“Drinking under compulsion is an evil equal to thirst”

τὸ πρὸς βίαν / πίνειν ἴσον πέφυκε τῷ διψῆν κακόν

(Yes, I had a problem with the extant article τῷ. It is an articular infinitive!)

  1. It seems sound to me, but perhaps I’m wrong. τῷ governs the infinitive διψῆν. — Something like, “Drinking to violence is the same as thirsting for evil.”
