Homer is Enough

PLATO, ION 531a

SOCRATES: Indeed, I will make time to hear you out, but tell me this: are you good at reciting Homer alone, or are you also good at Hesiod and Pindar?

ION: Not in the least – I am good at reciting Homer alone. That seems enough to me.

ΣΩ.

μόνον δεινὸς εἶ ἢ καὶ περὶ ῾Ησιόδου καὶ ᾿Αρχιλόχου;

ΙΩΝ.

  1. I enjoy your site immensely. It must take a lot of work to maintain.

    One minor cavil–the Greek has Socrates asking about Hesiod and Archilochus not Hesiod and Pindar.

    1. Thanks for catching that! I was putting this up in something of a hurry, and I must have had Pindar on the mind. Perhaps I was drinking water.
