Solon Wanted to Learn Some Sappho as his Final Song (Aelian, fr. 187)

Aelian, Fragment 187/190 (from Stobaeus 3.29.58)

“Solon the Athenian, the son of Eksêkestides, when his nephew sang some song of Sappho at a drinking party, took pleasure in it and asked the young man to teach it to him. When someone asked why he was eager to learn it, he responded: “So, once I learn it, I may die.”

“Perhaps it was also a better fate for him to die at the height of his reputation and when he would be missed by men before he could suffer that common human fate, which is the very thing Solon warned Kroisos about: that it is best to look to the end of even a long life and never to say openly that some man is fortunate before he is dead.”

Euripides echoes Solon but also refers to Athena as a maternal figure

Aristophanes echoes the defender motif and connects it with the glory of Athens as a martial and creative center (perhaps under influence of a more robust Panathenaia)

The shorter of the extant Homeric hymns focuses on Athena’s connection with war and heroes

the cities sacked, the shrill sound, and the battles,
She rescues the host when it leaves and when it returns”

The longer of the extant Homeric Hymns to Athena tells the story of her birth (but not her conception, perhaps reflecting the war-dances done in her honor

Tritogeneia, whom counselor Zeus himself gave birth to
from his sacred head, already holding her weapons,

Solon is a bit cantankerous. And chiding. And sententious.  Forgive me if I love him, but I do fear that if he wrote in prose (and Latin) he might be named Cicero.

“In the fourth part of life every man reaches the peak of his strength

which brings all men to the boundaries of virtue.

But in the fifth portion it is time for a man to think about marriage

and to seek after children to leave behind him.”

“It is not easy for a man raised too high to restrain himself later.”

 

“λίην δ’ ἐξάραντ’ <οὐ> ῥάιδιόν ἐστι κατασχεῖν”

So says Solon, who left power in Athens (according to Plutarch, oh, and that guy Herodotus...)

Solon, the lawgiver, has many things to say.

(In Latin you’d need to use the passive periphrastic to say this!)
