On the Origin of the Arts

“Of all the things to be sought in this world, the first is wisdom, in which the form of the perfect good consists. Wisdom illuminates a person so that he may know himself, who was similar to others when he did not understand that he was made before others. Indeed, the immortal soul, illumined by wisdom, looks back upon its origin and recognizes how indecent it is, so that it seeks beyond itself for something for which that which it itself is could be enough. It is read on the tripod of Apollo, ‘gnoti sauton,’ that is, know thyself, because unsurprisingly if a person is not unremembering of his own origin, he may recognize everything which is subject to change, though it be nothing.

The approved opinion among philosophers holds that the spirit is composed from all parts of nature. The Timaeus of Plato formed “actuality” out of divided and undivided and mixed substance, and in the same way out of the same and diverse nature, and a mixed nature from both. For it catches both the initial elements and those things which follow the initial elements, because it comprehends the invisible causes of things through its intelligence, and it collects the visible forms of actual things through its sense impressions, and once it has been divided, it collects movement into two spheres, because it either moves out of the senses to sensible things, or it ascends to invisible things through intelligence. Then, pulling the similarities of things to itself it circles back, and this is because the same mind, which can take universal things, is put together from every substance and nature, because it represents the figure of similitude. For, it was the Pythagorean belief that similar things are comprehended by similar things, as clearly the rational soul could in no way comprehend all things unless it were composed of all things. In support of this, someone says

‘We comprehend the earth with our earthly being, the aether with flame, humor with liquid, and the air with our breath.’

“There are many whom nature has left so destitute of intellect that they are unable to grasp even those things which are easiest to understand; of these people, there seem to be two types. There are certain people who, granting that they are not ignorant of their own dullness, eagerly strive for knowledge with whatever effort they can, and apply themselves to the task with unremitting zeal; though they achieve little from the realization of the work, they seem to deserve something for their efforts. But there are other people who understand that they will never be able to understand the highest things, so they neglect even the smallest ones, and resting secure in their own indolence, we find that the more they waste the light of truth in the most important things, the more they flee from learning the smallest things, which they are actually able to understand. For this reason, the Psalm has it, ‘They did not wish to understand how they could do well.’ Not knowing is, indeed, a far different thing from not wanting to know. Indeed, ignorance is a kind of weakness, but the detestation of knowledge is the sign of a depraved will.

There is, however, yet another group of people whom nature has so enriched that she has offered them a clear approach to the truth. For these people, even if the strength of their mind is not equal to the task, there is not the same virtue or will for cultivating the senses through exercise and natural instruction. For, there are many people who, wrapped up in the business and concerns of this age more than is really necessary, are entirely given to the vices and pleasures of the body, and they bury the treasure of God in the ground; they neither seek the fruit of wisdom, nor the use of good work – these people are on the whole rather detestable. Again, for some people, family poverty or their slender means diminishes the opportunity of learning. Yet, I think that these people can hardly be excused on this account, since we see so many people laboring under famine, thirst, and even want of clothes, who yet attain the fruit of knowledge. Indeed, it is one thing when you are not able (or, I should say, are not easily able) to learn, and it is an entirely different thing when you are able to learn but unwilling to do so. Just as it is more glorious to attain wisdom by virtue alone, when no other opportunities rush to assist you, so too it is much more shameful to have a vigorous intellect and to overflow with wealth while wasting away in idleness.”

The Tedium of a Scholastic Preface

It is a general maxim of expository or persuasive writing that one should first summarize what the reader can expect, but Hugo of St. Victor took this to an extreme:

“There are above all two things by which everyone may be brought to knowledge; these are reading and contemplation. Of these, reading obtains the first spot in learning, and this book deals with it by giving instruction on the art of reading. There are, however, three things which are of the highest important to reading: first, one should know what he ought to read; second, in what order he ought to read it; and third, how he ought to approach his reading. All three of these subjects are dealt with in this book. This book provides for the reader of either secular or divine texts, so it is divided into two parts, each of which has three distinctions: in the first part, it teachers the reader of the arts, and in the second, the divine reader, but it teaches them in this way, first by showing what is to be read, and then in what order and in what way. In order that it may be known what should be read (or what should be read above all), in the first part you will find enumerated first the origin of all arts, then the description and partition of them – that is, how each one of them contains another or is itself contained by another cutting through philosophy from the top all the way down to the bottom parts. The book then lists the authors of the arts and afterward shows what, most of all, one should read from these arts. It then makes clear in what order and how they should be read. Finally, it prescribes to the reader a mode of life, and thus the first part is brought to an end. In the second part, the book marks out what writings should be considered divine, then the number and order of divine books, along with their authors and interpretations of their names. Later, it goes on about certain special features of divine scripture which are particularly necessary. Then it teaches how one should properly read sacred scripture if one wishes to find in it a correction of his own habits and an overall mode of life. Finally, it will teach the one who reads for the love of wisdom, and thus the second part will come to an end.”
