Unfriendly Annotations – Housman on C.D. Beck

“For if his opponents disliked what he said of them in print for the public eye, they would have disliked much more what he said of them in pencil and designed only for his own. A single example will suffice, and it is one which can now hurt no one’s feelings. C.D. Beck’s Index Euripideus claims, impudently enough, to be Index accuratus et copiosus, verborum formularumque omnium in Euripidis tragoediis integris et deperditarum fragmentis, nec non epistolis, occurrentium. Opposite the claim in Housman’s copy are written in a large firm hand the words ‘Liar and slave.'”
