Lucian’s Rules for Saturnalia

Lucian, Kronosolon

“No one is to conduct any public or private business during the festival of the Saturnalia, except those things which pertain to education, nourishment, and rejoicing. Let only the butchers and the pastry cooks be at work. Let there be equal esteem for both slave and free, for both rich and poor. Let it be permitted to no one to rage, be vexed, or issue threats. Let there be no reckoning of expenses. Let no one count silver or clothes, nor publish any public register during the festival, nor get naked, nor work up or deliver speeches unless they be jolly and urbane, delivering them as a form of joke or play.”
