The Most Corrupted Texts

Aldus Manutius, Preface to Theocritus, Hesiod, Theognis:

“I am not returning to the correction of the texts – truly, some of them would require Oedipus as an editor. They’re so mutilated and corrupted that even the original author, if he were to come back to life, wouldn’t be able to emend them.”

Non enim recipio me ad emendaturum libros – nam in quibusdam Oedipo coniectore opus esset: ita enim mutilati sunt et inversi, ut ne ille quidem qui composuit, si revivesceret, emendare posset.
