Wine and Truth: Athenaeus 2.6

“Philochorus says that those who drink wine do not only show what sort of people they themselves are, but while they prattle on they also make revelations about each of their acquaintances. For this reason it is said

‘Wine and truth…’ [Alcaeus, fr. 57]

and

‘Wine reveals a man’s mind…’ [Theognis 500]”

 

Φιλόχορος δέ φησιν (FHG I 387) ὅτι οἱ πίνοντες οὐ μόνον ἑαυτοὺς ἐμφανίζουσιν οἵτινές εἰσιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἕκαστον ἀνακαλύπτουσι παρρησίανἄγοντες. ὅθεν ‘οἶνος καὶ ἀλήθεια’ (Alcaei fr. 57) λέγεταικαὶ ‘ἀνδρὸς δ’ <οἶνος> ἔδειξε νόον’ (Theogn. 500)
