She Was Very Particular

“The story runs that W.E. Jelf proposed to Miss Gaisford, who refused him; that Gaisford, Dean of Christ Church, urged the suitor’s deserts, as of a scholar knowing more about γε than any man in Oxford; that the young lady answered, ‘It might be so, but she herself knew too much about μὲν to accept him.'”

-Selby Henry, Good Stories from Oxford and Cambridge, p.78 (London, 1931)

NOTE: As mentioned in the anecdote, Thomas Gaisford was the Dean of Christ Church, and is known to Classicists primarily due to the enduring famae momumentum which still exists under his name as The Gaisford Prize, traditionally awarded to the composers of original Greek verse or prose.
