“The light of day is the sweetest thing for men to see

And the world beneath us is nothing. Whoever prays to die is insane.

Better to live badly than to die well.”

Iphigeneia, of course, changes her mind to the opposite opinion…here’s the full text.

Euripides, Fr. 638 (Polyidus)

Who knows whether living is really death

and whether death is thought to be living below?

Polyidus? A seer who found the son of Minos and restore him to life!

Euripides, Fragment 553

“It is foolish for a man to make his misfortunes known to everyone; it is wise to keep them hidden.”

Ah, fragments. Always so quotable because the culling has been done by someone else already! This one is from the lost Oedipus by Euripides, quoted by Stobaeus (4.45.6).

Euripides, Electra 743

“Myths frighten people.”

Fear isn’t always a bad thing, right?

Euripides, Electra 294-5

“Empathy is denied by ignorance but granted to the wise.”

Ok, ok. οἶκτος…ἀνδρῶν isn’t literally “empathy”: but it seems to fit the passage better.

Euripides Suppliant Women 1080-1

“Why isn’t it mortals’ fate to be young twice and then old again?”

νέους δὶς εἶναι καὶ γέροντας αὖ πάλιν;

Herakles got to defeat old age….

Doesn’t look like much of a fight

Euripides, Electra 583-4

It is right to  believe in the gods no longer if injustice will surpass what is just

Electra, daughter of Agamemnon, certainly had reasons to be confused by justice

Euripides, Iphigenia at Aulis 334

“An unsteady mind is an unjust possession”

Although many minds might come undone at the thought of Iphigenia….

Euripides, Iphigenia at Aulis, 917

“To give birth is awe-inspiring: it brings a great love charm. ”

Euripides is not always so kind to women…
