Euripides, Fragment 553

“It is foolish for a man to make his misfortunes known to everyone; it is wise to keep them hidden.”

Ah, fragments. Always so quotable because the culling has been done by someone else already! This one is from the lost Oedipus by Euripides, quoted by Stobaeus (4.45.6).

Plato, Lysis 210d

“If you are wise, then everyone will be your family and friend.”

(Because you are useful and good)

Theognis, 801-804

“There is will be and there has been no man

who has pleased everyone when he goes to Hades”

Kerberos: one of the obstacles you meet on the way to Hades

Who is Theognis and what did Nietzsche think of him?
