Theognis 989-990

“Drink whenever they drink but let no man discover you’re burdened

whenever you’re sick in the heart.”

I am not positive that this is good advice. It sounds nice…

(Theognis alone is intoxicating.)

Theognis, 725-726

“No one goes to Hell with all his precious possessions”

Thegonis, 1217-1218

“May we never laugh as we sit beside a weeping man

and take pleasure in our own good fortune”

Theognis, 1219-1220

“It is difficult for an enemy to deceive

But it is easy for a friend to fool a friend.”

Fool me once?

Theognis of Megara, a man with words for all occasions.

Theognis, 831-832

“I lost my money by trusting, but I saved it through deceit

Both lessons are hard.”

Theognis, the one from Megara

Theognis 627-628

It is shameful when a man is drunk among the sober

and it is shameful if man remains sober among drunks

Theognis, 1135-6

“Hope is the only good god present among men

The rest abandoned us and went to Olympos”

A Hope Tattoo?

Theognis, more a method than a man.

Theognis, 457-8

A young wife is no advantage for an old man,

Just like a boat that doesn’t heed its rudder

Theognis doesn’t have nice things to say about marraige

Perhaps this is because some of his lines are dedicated to his eromenos

Theognis, 1185-1186

“The mind and tongue are good: but they grow in few men who are masters of both”

We know lamentably little about Theognis of Megara

Theognis 1363-64

“I will never hurt you by leaving and no man

will persuade me not to love you”

Theognis of Megara.
