“Strife that gives birth to strife fosters reason.”
῎Ερις ἔριν τίκτουσα προσμνᾶται λόγον.
The paroemiographer Arsenius adds: “this is applied to those striving over philosophy” (ἤτοι ἐπὶ φιλοσοφίᾳ ἐριζόντων).
Michael Apostolius, 17.73
