In his Allegories of the Iliad, John Tzetzes has a habit of interjecting comments on his own intelligence into his work:
“But John Tzetzes can spin a fine allegory, so you should pay attention!”

So he talks about himself in the 3rd person? Well, I guess he has Xenophon and Caesar as noble exemplars.
